Highways

highways

We're at the forefront of keeping the UK's roads and motorways among the safest in the world, as well as promoting more reliable journeys and the provision of information to travellers.

Generating around half our revenues and with £110m of recent wins, renewals and extensions, Highways has always represented a major chunk of our project portfolio.

Managing and improving motorways
In our previous capacity as the Highways Agency's sole managing agent for one of Europe's busiest road networks, the M25, we trained up a new breed of 24-hour road stewards to monitor traffic conditions and attend serious incidents.

In addition we're widening the M1, overseeing a pilot scheme to ease congestion on the M42, and are involved in more unusual projects such as campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers of dropping objects from motorway bridges.

Looking after local roads
We're not shy about taking on the complex task of managing the UK's local roads either.

Eighteen local authorities, several public agencies and even private developers all make use of our expertise in highways and bridge engineering, road network management and operations, traffic engineering, transportation planning and public transport - making us the number one provider in this market.

They know they can rely on us to oversee all stages of each project, from costing and design through to construction - whether it's pedestrianising a town centre, introducing bus lanes and other traffic calming measures, or strengthening bridges.

A wide range of experience
Further examples of our work include ensuring the smooth integration of a tram system in Nottinghamshire, developing a reversal of a gyratory road system for a new Tesco store in Prestatyn, and providing transport modelling and forecasting for a new island settlement that will be home to 80,000 people off the coast of Kuwait.

We manage thousands of public buildings such as schools, libraries and adult care homes on behalf of local authorities and public agencies – helping them to reduce costs and focus their energy on improving service quality.

We wouldn’t be able to achieve the results we do if our culture wasn’t so suited to this area of service delivery. We combine the client focus and innovation you’d expect from the private sector with a real understanding of the everyday challenges facing the users of public services.

Managed services contracts, typically lasting between three and 25 years, make up a large proportion of our projects in this sector.

Because we have a constant flow of work, we’re able to allocate resources more effectively, providing clients with reliable, high-quality services. It also allows our employees to complete smaller projects while focusing on strategies that deliver long-term improvements to the very heart of society.

We offer a full range of housing management services to council tenants and leaseholders, as well as professional housing and regeneration consultancies, local authorities, housing associations and government agencies and departments.

Housing is an area of our business where there is huge variety in terms of the work we take on. Sustainability is crucial, with activities designed to promote community cohesion, deliver cost-effective and timely solutions, and give people a sense of ownership over their own environment.

Our ongoing neighbourhood management contract with Hackney Council perfectly illustrates this – affecting over 12,000 tenants and including activities such as rent collection, tenant liaison, estate visits and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.

Working in conjunction with the community, local council, Home Office and Metropolitan Police, we’ve driven the regeneration of a disused launderette - and notorious crack-house - into a highly successful mother and toddler group centre and pensioners’ lunch club.
