Rail

With clients such as Network Rail, London Underground and several major Train Operating Companies (TOCs), there's no doubt that Mouchel is involved in some of the most high-profile rail projects around.

Our long-term contracts with Network Rail see us going over ground, underground and even under water to manage every aspect of their infrastructure, from bridges and tunnels, to buildings.

We inspect and report back on their condition, model future deterioration and provide high-level strategic advice on funding requirements.

We're also involved in station refurbishments, large signalling schemes and bridge strengthening projects - often using advanced composite materials to strengthen and rehabilitate older structures.

Pioneering bridge work
A good example of this is our innovative use of aerospace technology to upgrade the cast iron Hammersmith Road Bridge, which crosses a mainline railway. As one of the busiest roads in London it couldn't just be rebuilt, so we set about strengthening it using advanced carbon fibres.

The result was a bridge that can now take 40 tonne vehicles, while our expert management of the project meant disruption was kept to an absolute minimum. Our pioneering work even won us the prestigious Modern Railways Award for Innovation in 2003.

Going undergound
Our Rail division has been working on some exciting projects for London Underground too, such as assisting them in developing the long term high level strategy for managing their civil engineering assets, and in the development of their Asset Condition Assessment and Certification process, designed to provide an objective measure of the condition of their assets.

We've also been working with Thales to replace the existing signalling system on the Jubilee and Northern lines, so increasing the number of passenger trains per hour.
