Forward to Waste

We enable our clients to deliver water cleanly, safely and cost-effectively with the minimum of waste. We also help clients defend the UK's coastal areas and the communities around lakes and rivers from flooding.

Our Water Business Unit covers the complete spectrum of water related activities.

Our Asset Management activities cover areas such as leak detection together with maintenance and operation of Water Utility assets. We also provide high level strategic advice to a number of the Water Companies as part of the production of their 5 year Asset Management Plans, AMP. With much of the UK's water infrastructure more than one hundred years old, there are also plenty of challenges.

Within the Capital Projects part of our business we undertake capital design projects not only for Water Utilities but also in relation to projects associated with regenerating marine environments, including defence schemes that safeguard several major docks and harbours, and also river engineering and flood prevention projects. We also work with the Coal Authority to develop environmentally sensitive treatments that prevent water discharge from out-of-use mines.

A growth area
Water represents an important area of growth for us. We've recently been successful in winning long-term commissions with the major UK Water suppliers with an enviable track record of undertaking work for all of the UK Water and Sewerage Companies together with Scottish Water and DRD Water Service (NI).

Waste

We offer a range of sustainable waste management services to local authorities and waste operators.

Waste management is increasingly at the forefront of the public conscience and for good reason. Recycling has increased significantly, collection services are changing, less waste is sent to landfill than in 2000 and waste growth is now growing at a lower rate than the economy at 0.5% a year. There is still much to achieve and waste is a major strand of Government's responsibility for the environment. There are wonderful career opportunities in this sector.

With the Government and the European Union also demanding higher levels of recycling, the need for innovative, far-reaching and results-oriented solutions has never been greater. The Government's 2007 Waste Strategy calls for more waste prevention and re-use, greater landfill diversion of all wastes, investment in infrastructure and greater recycling of resources and recovery of energy.

When we provide sustainable solutions for our clients it means helping local authorities develop their strategy, policies, procurement programmes and planning and estates. We support our waste contractors in the implementation their strategies and project manage bidding for major contracts to the delivery of recycling, treatment and recovery facilities. We always aim to offer solutions that are practical, cost-effective, and, most importantly, environmentally responsible.

A great example of this is our work with Shanks for the East London Waste Management Authority, where we secured planning applications for six new facilities and have project managed the delivery of infrastructure for the past 5 years.

We are involved in all aspects of this project from design through to construction - as a result helping to deliver a new generation of waste services and infrastructure to the east end of London.
